The Monkey and the Crocodile
Once upon a time, a clever monkey named Milo lived on a big jamun tree by the river. The tree had the sweetest, purple fruit in the whole forest. In the river lived an old crocodile named Croc. One day, Milo tossed some sweet fruit down to Croc. "Thank you, Milo!" Croc said. "These are delicious!" Milo and Croc became best friends. Every day, they would talk and eat fruit together. But Croc’s wife was not kind. She said to Croc, "If that monkey eats such sweet fruit every day, his heart must be the sweetest thing of all! Bring me his heart for dinner." Croc was sad, but he agreed. He swam to Milo and said, "Friend, come to my house for lunch! Hop on my back, and I will carry you across the river." Milo hopped on! But in the middle of the deep water, Croc told the truth. "My wife wants to eat your heart, Milo. I am sorry." Milo did not panic. He was very smart. "Oh, Croc!" Milo said. "Why didn't you tell me sooner? I left my heart hanging on the jamun tree! We must go back and get it." Croc believed him. He turned around and swam back to the shore. As soon as they reached the land, Milo jumped off and climbed to the very top of the tree. "You silly crocodile!" Milo shouted. "Nobody can take out their heart and hang it on a tree. We are not friends anymore!"
